Affiliate marketing can be incredibly profitable...but only if you know what you're doing. If you're just going to dive into this headfirst without putting much thought into it trying to make a quick buck, then chances are that your earnings will reflect that.
On the other hand, if you're willing to do a bit of research and learn how to go about this the proper way, you can most definitely earn pay checks in the thousands of dollars each month. There are many affiliates out there who have been able to quit their jobs and work fulltime from home online, many of whom are pulling in 6-figure incomes in the process.
Now, maybe you're not aiming for a 6-figure income from your online efforts, but just imagine if you were able to earn even an additional $20,000-$30,000 each year... wouldn't that be nice? It's definitely possible, and you can mark my words on that.
But if there's one thing that you need to understand and accept, it's that the entire process does take time, and that you will need to do your homework first. The reality is that you probably won't make much in your first couple of months, but as you gain experience and knowledge you'll watch as your earnings go through a "snow ball" effect and gather more and more speed the farther you go along.
Now, there's no use in me sitting here trying to teach you everything there is to know about affiliate marketing, as there are a nearly endless number of online resources that can already teach you how. The problem is that there's a ton of useless crap out there when it comes to making money online, and it can often be tough to know who to listen to.
The purpose of this section is to point you in the direction of the resources that I would personally recommend.Some are free resources, and others have a price tag on them. I would recommend using both. If you're afraid to spend a bit of money to make money, then you aren't in the proper mind set to begin with.

So you can be 100% sure that these are nothing more than honest, unbiased recommendations.

Online Discussion Forums
First and foremost, I would suggest that you visit all 3 of the following discussion forums and sign up as a member right away. Bookmark these sites, and visit them daily to check out the latest discussions. If you have questions about affiliate marketing, post them. There are tons of knowledgeable members who can personally help you out.
I'd also suggest browsing through previous threads, as it will literally be a goldmine of useful knowledge for you.
You can search around and find other forums as well, but these 3 are my main recommendations, and I see no reason why you shouldn't drop everything and join them right away.

This is a great 10-day course that will teach you about all of the major aspects of affiliate marketing from brainstorming ideas, to building a proper website to generating huge amounts of traffic that pull in sales. At the very least, you should read through the free learning center above. This will outline all the basics for you and get you on track to setting up a profitable campaign.

If you're really serious about maximizing your pay-per-click success, check out Perry Marshall's course above. I personally purchased this course when I first began, and it played a huge role in allowing me to make big money from Adwords and other PPC engines.
